Sihagi Lords Self Help Group

According to UNICEF, the estimated adult prevalence of HIV/AIDs in Kenya is 6.3%. The majority of Kenyans know at least one person, either a friend or family member, who has HIV/AIDs or has died from HIV/AIDs. Kenyan society generally places a major stigma on those living with HIV/AIDs. Often, those affected with HIV/AIDs are isolated, not only in shame imposed by them by the society in which they live but also to important facilities which could help empower them to lead successful lives. Many people living with HIV/AIDs in Kenya may find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty due to health issues. Sihagi Lords Self Help Group was founded in Dareni, a community close to Chogoria, Kenya, in the mid-2000s with the purpose of empowering members by creating a support network for those living with HIV/AIDs. Members of the group have been meeting regularly each month since its founding.

Understanding the vulnerable position of those living with HIV/AIDs, Village Hopecore has been working closely with the group. In January 2007 they received their first loan and they received a second loan in 2009. In addition to each of the 12 members receiving loans, they also received training on entrepreneurship, basic business skills, how to run a successful business, and health topics. For many of the members, the loan gave them the opportunity to create or improve their sources of income through business. Many found their income increasing by double and consequently, they were able to buy much-needed medicine, and nutritious food and pay for their children’s school fees. More importantly, it enabled them to rise up from the stigma of HIV/AIDS, empower themselves, and continue to persevere and live their lives. At the end of 2011, Village Hopecore continued its support of Sihagi Lords Self Help Group by providing health education on malaria prevention and mosquito nets to the group and their family members.
